City, Cargill near sewer deal

Cargill would pay sewer bills to Fort Dodge that will enable the city to pay off debt incurred to expand the wastewater treatment plant, according to a deal presented to the City Council Monday.

City Manager David Fierke said the local government agreed to expand the treatment plant to meet the needs of Tate & Lyle, the company that built and then sold what is now the Cargill corn milling facility west of Fort Dodge.

He said that Cargill plans to treat its own waste water, which will come to the wastewater treatment plant only to be disinfected.

Under the terms of the proposed deal, Cargill will pay the city $95,690 per month in a flat fee. It will also pay the city 30 cents per 1,000 gallons of wastewater for the first 2.2 million gallons per day and 20 cents per 1,000 gallons when more than 2.2 million gallons per day are treated.

The council is expected to act on the deal during its July 8 meeting.

In other business, the council:

  • Approved a one-year lease with Fairway Outdoor Advertising LLC, of Rochester, Minn. for a billboard at Hawkeye Avenue and Riverside Drive. The company’s rent will be $350 for the entire year.
  • Approved an application for a property tax abatement for a new house at 1701 Rolling Hills Drive.
  • Made the human resources/equal employment opportunity specialist position a full-time job.
  • Transferred $100,000 from an economic development account to the Neighborhood Stabilization Program account.
  • Purchased benches and trash cans for city trails from RJ Thomas Manufacturing Co. Inc., of Cherokee, for $14,522.70.
