Dodgers top Alburnett
ALBURNETT – The Fort Dodge softball team swept a doubleheader from No. 12 (Class 2A) Alburnett on Friday.
Scores were 5-1 and 16-3 in favor of the Dodgers (17-8 overall).
Lani Van Zyl and Mallory Kilian each collected two hits in the first game for FDSH. Kilian also helped her own cause at the plate with two RBI and a run scored.
Kilian (10-5) went the distance in the win, allowing just three hits with three strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Kilian went 2-for-4 with her sixth longball of the season. Meagan Hartman, Maddie Bodholdt and Kinna Teske all added a pair of hits, while Van Zyl reached base five times. Hartman drove in three, and Maddie Egli had two RBI.
Starter Cassie Tjebben (7-3) earned the victory.
“Since all the other teams backed out (of the Linn-Mar Invitational) due to bad field conditions, we just ended up playing a doubleheader with Alburnett,” said FDSH head coach Andi Adams. “We did a good job of situational hitting, which is what we’ve been working on. We’re still trying to find that right lineup.”
With the two losses, the Pirates fell to 16-9 on the year.
Fort Dodge will now face eighth-ranked (2A) Jesup and Cedar Rapids Washington here this afternoon. Start times are set for 12:45 p.m. and 4:15 p.m., respectively.
