Dodgers fall in extras twice

WAUKEE – The eighth-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge softball team dropped a pair of eight-inning affairs to No. 7 Waukee here Wednesday night.

Scores were 7-4 and 6-5.

Taylor Luther, the Warriors’ sophomore catcher, ended the first game with a walk-off three-run homer after the Dodgers (15-8 overall) had taken a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth.

Lani Van Zyl went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, while Mallory Kilian had two hits. Kilian also recorded eight strikeouts.

“We just couldn’t close the door,” FDSH head coach Andi Adams said. “I was proud of the effort the girls showed all around (Wednesday night).

“We had parents coming up to us after the game, and the Waukee coach talking about how they said we are one of the toughest teams they have faced all year.”

The Warriors scored two in the seventh to send the game to extras before ending it on the Luther homer.

In the nightcap, it was Fort Dodge’s turn to rally, as they erased a 5-0 deficit to tie in with a five-run fifth.

Kilian had two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Meagan Hartman, an eighth-grader, relieved in the second and allowed one run.

The Dodgers return to action this Friday against fifth-ranked (2A) Jesup at the Linn-Mar Invitational.
