No. 5 Fort Dodge sweeps

DES MOINES – The fifth-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge baseball team earned matching 13-3 victories over Des Moines Roosevelt here Tuesday night.

Cory Alexander highlighted the opener for the Dodgers, going 4-for-4 with five RBI, as he connected on a grand slam in a contest completed from last Friday’s rainout.

Parker Van Zyl and Tyler Vaughn each had two hits for FDSH (13-4 overall), while Vaughn scored four times.

In the nightcap, Keegan Gormally had three hits and Tommy Halligan contributed two. Devon Harms, Gormally, Van Zyl and Halligan all had two RBI each.

“We hit the ball well – I’m not sure it was a better offensive performance than (in a split against Ames on Monday), but they were falling,” FDSH head coach Blake Utley said. “That’s baseball. Sometimes you get the bounces and breaks and hit it where they aren’t.”

Tommy Halligan and Eric Puls combined to defeat Roosevelt in the opener. Halligan returned to the mound in relief of his younger brother, Austin, in the nightcap to complete the sweep of the Roughriders (3-17).

“Puls and both Halligans did well on the mound,” Utley said. “Our defense was solid behind them. Tommy had a heck of a day at third base.”

Fort Dodge returns to action today at Waukee. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
