STILLWATER, Minn. – Bertha Leonora Vorland passed away at Boutwells Landing, Stillwater, Minn.

She was born on the family farm in Ringsted IA, the youngest child of Ole and Louisa (Berkland) Solberg who preceded her in death as did her six brothers: Oscar, Bernard, Otto, Edward, Adolph and Irvin; and her sister, Esther Heggen. She is also preceded in death by her daughter Cathy (Michael) Donnelly of Melbourne, Australia.

Left to cherish her memory are her loving and beloved husband Rev Gehard Vorland in Stillwater MN; her sons: Bruce (Yuri) in Nagoya Japan, Keith (Joan) in Vancouver BC, and Andy (Yukari) also in Nagoya, Japan; her grandchildren: Matthew & Nicholas in Australia, Erika, Maia, & Noa in Japan, and Kai & Mia in Canada; her great-granddaughter Isabella in Australia; and many nieces and nephews.

In 1953 she accompanied Gehard to Japan as a missionary and remained there until returning home in 1990. As well as supporting his ministry and bringing up her family she also taught kindergarten at the Nagoya International School. She was awarded Waldorf College’s Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 1984 and the quality of her cinnamon rolls is famous on three continents. She embodied and taught by example the values of the hearth: a homemaker, a nurturer, and a supporter, equally adept at giving practical assistance or sage counsel.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, 14 June, 2013 at St John’s Lutheran Church in Cylinder (Depew) IA followed by interment at St John’s Church North Cemetery. Visitation will take place at St John’s from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, 13 June. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.

The family requests that, instead of remembering her with flowers, consideration be given to a donation that will help feed the hungry.
