Gael baseball team loses twice
WEST DES MOINES – The St. Edmond baseball squad dropped a pair of decisions to ranked opponents here on Saturday at the West Des Moines Dowling Invitational.
The Gaels (3-8 overall) dropped a 10-4 decision in their opener against No. 1 (Class 1A) Mason City Newman, then fell 7-4 to seventh-rated (2A) Iowa City Regina in their final contest.
David Flattery went 4-for-4 against Newman with two doubles and an RBI. Cal Coleman and Ryan Szalat chipped in two hits each for St. Edmond, which committed five errors and allowed seven unearned runs to score.
Against Regina, Coleman, Matthew Bocken and Hank Crimmins recorded two hits a piece. Crimmins and Bocken doubled.
”Newman was a big, physical ballclub, and it doesn’t help that we were throwing the ball around (defensively),” SEHS head coach Joe Shanks said. ”Our guys are working hard to get things going, but we’ve faced very tough competition this week and our margin for error isn’t much – especially if we’re not making the routine plays or executing the way we should be.”
The Gaels are at Eagle Grove on Monday.
