Dodgers sweeep SC North

SIOUX CITY – The ninth-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge baseball team has had trouble in the past with Sioux City North.

Friday afternoon, the Dodgers scored a doubleheader sweep of their rivals, earning 13-3 and 2-1 victories.

Keegan Gormally and Andrew Stover each picked up victories on the mound for Fort Dodge (7-2 overall), while Austin Halligan, Cory Alexander and Devon Harms had three-hit games in the opener.

“Sioux City North has had our number over the years,” FDSH head coach Blake Utley said. “In fact, before the first game, we saw a sign that read ‘2009 State Baseball Champions’ on it and we told the kids about how they came back to beat us to reach that title game.

“I think that really fired them up and they came out and scored right away that first inning.”

Halligan added a double and three RBI, while Alexander had three runs, a double and three RBI, as well, to back Gormally on the mound.

Gormally, who also collected two hits, recorded five strikeouts and allowed just five hits to improve to 2-1. Stover, in the nightcap, recorded three strikeouts and scattered five hits, picking up his first victory of the season.

“Keegan and Andrew both settled in nicely and set the tone for us with their pitching,” Utley said. “Keegan had seven- and five-pitch innings, and our defense backed him up.”

Parker Van Zyl plated both runs for the Dodgers in the win, while Tommy Halligan scored twice on two hits.

Fort Dodge returns to action today against No. 7 (4A) Sioux City East in a single contest at 2 p.m. SC North is now 9-4 on the year, while Sioux City East is 7-2.
