CARROLL – The St. Edmond baseball team lost a 4-0 decision to Granville Spalding in CYO tournament action on Sunday.
The Gaels (3-3 overall) played strong defensively, but couldn’t muster much offense.
“We’re not swinging the bats,” said St. Edmond head coach Joe Shanks. “We didn’t have timely hitting and were in kind of a funk.”
Ryan Szalat, Hank Crimmins, Cal Coleman, Robert Flattery and Tommy Setterdahl had the hits for the Gaels.
Szalat got his first start and walked only one batter.
“Ryan saw his first start,” Shanks said. “He threw strikes and got out of a few scrapes.
“He’s a contact pitcher and our defense played well behind him. David (Flattery), who was playing third, scooped a squeeze bunt and flipped it to Brady Reiling for the out. We also turned a double play in the second.”
The Gaels are back in action on Monday when they travel to Iowa Falls-Alden for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
