Gaels 2nd at CYO

CARROLL – The St. Edmond softball team had a strong showing at the CYO tournament, coming home with a second place showing on Sunday.

The seventh ranked Gaels (6-1 overall) topped Remsen St. Mary’s 8-1 in the semifinals and lost to 14th-ranked (Class 4A) Bishop Heelan 5-1 in the championship.

“This was one of our best showings at this tournament,” said St. Edmond head coach Paul Hunt. “It’s a good tournament year in and year out. Remsen is a solid group and they can hit up and down the lineup.

“We fielded well during the game and we saw our offense start to click.”

In the semifinals the Gaels pounded out 14 hits.

Jaci Stumpf was 2-for-3 with two triples. Anna Young had two doubles.

Amanda Lansman (3-0) earned the win, striking out eight batters.

In the nightcap Maggie Harvey was 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run.

“Heelan has been our toughest competition so far,” Hunt said. “We had issues with leaving runners in scoring position. We hit the ball, we just hit it right at them.”

Harvey and Lansman were named to the all-tournament team.

The Gaels are back in action tonight when they travel to Iowa Falls-Alden. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.
