Capesius takes 1A girls golf crown

MARSHALLTOWN – Bishop Garrigan junior Alexa Capesius easily took home individual medalist honors from the Class 1A girls state meet, which finished here on Wednesday at the American Legion Golf Course.

Capesius, who was fourth at state a year ago, carded a second-round 71 for a two-day score of 150. She closed with 12 pars, three birdies and three bogeys and was 10 strokes in front of the nearest competitor Wednesday.

Valley of Elgin’s Jodi Schott (83-81-164) turned in a runner-up effort.

In the team race, the Golden Bears placed second (361-352-713). Grundy Center (357-354-711) was the winner.

Rebecca Richter (13th, 87-91-178), Haley Froehlich (15th, 94-86-180), Brittany Arndorfer (tied for 34th, 101-108-209) and Makayla Foertsch (tied for 34th, 105-104-209) rounded out the scorecard for Garrigan.

Southeast Webster-Grand’s Kelsey Travis finished in a deadlock with three others for 22nd (96-93-189).

Cassie Gearhart of West Bend-Mallard tied for 41st (110-109-219).

Connelly finishes 15th in 2A

MARSHALLTOWN – Emmetsburg’s Ashton Connelly settled for 15th at the Class 2A girls state golf meet Wednesday at American Legion.

Connelly shot a second-round 89, leaving her at plus-18 for the day. She finished at 177, while notching a pair of birdies.

As a team, the E-Hawks checked in fourth (376-372-748). Alta-Aurelia (339-345-684) paced the field.

Taylor Knight (tied for 20th, 94-93-187), Hanna Van Oosbree (tied for 24th, 98-91-189), Michaela Rehm (tied for 30th, 103-99-202) and Jacque Carlson (45th, 107-115-222) were Emmetsburg’s other participants .

Nashua-Plainfield’s Sarah McMichael (79-81-160) was the individual medalist.

Ernst third, Livengood 12th at 3A state golf

AMES – East Sac County’s Makayla Ernst earned bronze at the Class 3A girls state meet at the Ames Golf and Country Club.

Ernst recorded an opening-round 80 before inclement weather conditions cancelled Wednesday’s 3A action. South Tama’s Paige Van Dyk (72) grabbed gold.

Mikaela Livengood from Clarion-Goldfield fired an 88, placing her 12th overall.

Carroll Kuemper (367) was the team champion.

Humboldt places eighth in 4A

AMES – The Humboldt girls golf team placed eighth at the Class 4A state meet at the Ames Golf and Country Club.

Charles City (330) led the way, while the Wildcats tallied a 409.

Savannah Schnetzer (13th, 88), Caitlin Kohlhaas (tied for 37th, 101), Taylor Weydert (46th, 109), Ashley Samuelson (48th, 111), Emily Case (tied for 52nd, 117) and Shelby Shepard (tied for 52nd, 117) all competed for Humboldt.

Jessie Sindlinger from Charles City cruised to a victory after her blistering eight-under 65.

Wednesday’s second round 4A action was cancelled due to inclement weather conditions.
