Boy drowns in Palo Alto Co. lake

EMMETSBURG – A 2-year-old drowned Saturday night after the pickup truck in which he was riding drove into Five Island Lake.

Larzen Charles Hanson, of Emmetsburg, son of Lance and Tracy Hanson, was pronounced dead at Palo Alto County Hospital Saturday.

According to Palo Alto County Sheriff Lynn Schultes, a 911 call was received at 9:29 p.m. Saturday, reporting an unknown problem at the north boat ramp, north of the dam on Five Island Lake.

Upon the arriving at the scene, officers discovered that a 1999 Chevrolet pickup registered to Lance Hanson had slipped into gear and rolled into Five Island Lake. Three young children were in the pickup at the time of the incident.

According to Schultes, family members and others at the scene managed to pull two of the children from the truck by the time law enforcement officers arrived, but the third child remained trapped in the vehicle, which was fully submerged in the lake.

Rescuers were able to locate the child and bring him to shore, where life-saving efforts began.

The child was then transported to the hospital.

Later in the night, Larzen Charles Hanson, 2 years old, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by the Emmetsburg Police Department, Emmetsburg Fire Department, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Palo Alto County Conservation Officers, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and Palo Alto County Ambulance Service.
