Dodgers lose to Johnston
JOHNSTON – The Fort Dodge boys soccer team bowed out of postseason play here Wednesday night, falling to No. 2 (Class 3A) Johnston, 4-1, in a substate semifinal.
The Dragons (17-1overall) will now host Ames (12-3) on Saturday for a berth in the state field.
Titus Aba scored the lone goal for the Dodgers (6-9-1), tying the game at 1-all late in the opening half. Johnston responded with a goal before the intermission, and added two more in the final 40 minutes.
“Our guys really played great against a powerhouse of a school like Johnston,” FDSH head coach Pablo Rodriguez said. “Johnston moved the ball well and were strong with it; they are a very good team.”
Fort Dodge also lost to the Dragons earlier this year, 5-0.
Sophomore Ethan Schwendemann made 17 saves in net for the Dodgers, who will lose six players to graduation.
The seniors are Brandon Daniels, Alex Hage, Zachary DeLanoit, Josh Harklau, Andrew Sheker and Mayco Matute.
“All of my seniors are going to be missed,” Rodriguez said. “They all gave great effort, right down to the last second (Wednesday night).”
