Impressive debut for Gael softball
FONDA – The St. Edmond softball team jump-started 2013 with a commanding 11-2 victory over perennial Class 1A state qualifier Newell-Fonda here Monday night.
Katie Donnelly allowed just one earned run and scattered five hits, striking out nine batters and issuing no walks to earn the win for the Gaels (1-0 overall).
Maggie Harvey, making her varsity debut as an eighth-grader, went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a double, while Amanda Lansman had three runs scored.
“Katie threw a fantastic game and Maggie is showing so much leadership as an eighth-grader,” SEHS head coach Paul Hunt said. “Up and down the lineup, everybody was hitting the ball.
“It really showed how much these girls worked in the offseason.”
Jaci Stumpf, Cassie Sells, Brigid Hanley and Jessica Kuebler all had two hits against Newell-Fonda’s (0-1) Renee Maneman. Hanley drove in four runs and had two doubles, while Stumpf plated two and belted a triple.
Jordan Wilken led the Mustangs with two hits, while Maneman struck out five batters. Maneman surrendered just 22 runs in 81 innings all of last year, going 10-3.
“We looked out of sync,” Newell-Fonda head coach Dick Jungers said. “St. Edmond did a great job of putting the ball in play. We struggled at times making plays on defense.
“St. Edmond has a very nice team and they made more contact with their bats.”
The Gaels plated three runs in the fourth, sixth and seven innings, adding two in the fifth.
St. Edmond returns to action on Thursday when they visit Pocahontas Area. The home opener for the Gaels is set for next Tuesday at Rogers Park against Hampton-Dumont.
In junior varsity action, St. Edmond picked up a 12-0 victory. Lansman threw four perfect innings and hit a home run.
