Jury convicts Early woman for meth
EARLY – A jury took three hours Thursday to convict a 54-year-old Early woman on methamphetamine charges.
Shirley Schmitt was convicted of one count of conspiracy to manufacture and distribute meth and one count of possession of pseudoephedrine with intent to manufacture meth, according to the United States Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Iowa.
She remains free on bond pending sentencing. That date has not been set.
Evidence showed Schmitt was involved in distributing 50 grams or more of pure meth from 2010 through July 2012, according to U.S. attorney’s office. Purchase logs showed Schmitt had acquired at least 98 grams of pseudoephedrine beginning in July 2010. She also had other people obtain at least 400 grams of pseudoephedrine and other items in exchange for meth, the U.S. attorney’s office said in a press release.
On June 28, 2012, Schmitt got pseudoephedrine from an undercover officer and agreed to make meth for that officer.
