SE’s Halligan medalist in opening round

Both the Emmetsburg and St. Edmond girls advanced to the regional finals from a Class 2A first-round 1B golf meet here Monday at Lakeside.

The E-Hawks and Gaels each fired a 406, but Emmetsburg’s Katie Ruiz (120) prevailed in a fifth-score tiebreaker over St. Edmond’s Lauren Moeding (121).

“It was just a very windy day and it took a little while to get warmed up, but the course was in good condition,” said Gael head coach Justin Faiferlick. “(The final outcome) was very tight, and we knew it was going to come down to just a matter of strokes.”

Emma Halligan (87) secured medalist honors for SEHS. Other Gael counters were Maggie Fitzgerald (100), Autumn Essing (109) and Melissa Mikos (110).

“Emma had a great round and qualified individually, but I was glad we got the whole team to the regional finals,” Faiferlick said. “Autumn also did a nice job of picking up her score a little bit to help us advance.”

Taylor Knight (95) placed sixth overall for the E-Hawks, followed by Ashton Connelly (101), Hanna Van Oosbree (105) and Michaela Rehm (105).

Pocahontas Area, which finished third (408), was represented by Molly Geick (96), Hannah Maley (100), Emily Dornath (104) and Caitlyn Jacobs (108).

North Union’s lineup featured Jasmine Clausen (107), Brittney Evans (110), Marissa Doocy (121) and Miranda Kollasch (129).

Tiffany Blunk (113), Cadie Schmadeke (122), Stephanie Blunk (132) and Kristen Reeves (141) all participated for Prairie Valley.

Other individuals moving on were Ogden’s Elisabeth Rinehart (89) and Emily Rhienhart (94), Okoboji’s Alex Mankle (91) and South Hamilton’s Maggie Peters (92).

Regional final action is set for Monday in Pocahontas.
