SE boys golf on to districts

CARROLL – The St. Edmond boys golf team moved on here Friday, firing a 322 to place second at a Class 2A sectional meet.

The Gaels advance to next Friday’s state-qualifying district meet in Storm Lake.

Joining St. Edmond will be sectional champion OA-BCIG, along with Emmetsburg, Okoboji, Hull Western Christian, Rock Valley and Sioux Center. Both Emmetsburg and Rock Valley earned sectional titles at their respective sites.

Behind Dakota Miller’s round of 70, OA-BCIG bested the Gaels by six strokes in the team standings.

“I am really happy with our team,” SEHS head coach Dan Streit said. “We haven’t been to districts as a team since 2004, so the kids are pretty excited.

“It’s all about surviving and advancing now. We’ve been shooting real well, so hopefully that continues.”

Michael Faiferlick and Robert Flattery each shot 79s to pace St. Edmond, placing in a tie for fourth with Prairie Valley’s Conner Conrad.

Conrad, a freshman like Flattery, also moved on to districts, along with meet runner-up Justin Kraft from East Sac County. Kraft fired a round of 78, winning silver in a playoff over Adam Beckerman from OA-BCIG.

Eddie Doyle added an 80 and Harrison Mayer an 84 to round out the four counters for St. Edmond. David Flattery chipped in an 85 and Cal Coleman a 96.

“Michael had a real good round and I was really happy with Robert’s performance as just a freshman,” Streit said. “Eddie didn’t have as good a day as he has been, but he was right in there, too.”

The district meet will take place at the Lake Creek Country Club in Storm Lake beginning at 10 a.m. The state meet goes down May 24-25 in Livermore at Spring Valley Golf Course.

At districts, the top-two teams and top-four individual finishers – if they are not part of the top finishing teams – will move on.
