Traffic count on new section of U.S. Highway 20 rising
GALVA – The number of vehicles traveling on one of the newest four-lane sections of U.S. Highway 20 is surging, according to data compiled by the Iowa Department of Transportation.
Dakin Schultz, a planner for the department, said 2013 traffic counts on the route north of Rockwell City in Calhoun County have increased by 40 to 47 percent compared to same period last year.
He said there is an automatic traffic recorder there that logs the number of passing vehicles 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The most recent 2013 figures available are for March. Schultz said 4,386 vehicles traveled on that section of the highway that month.
That compares to 2,970 vehicles that crossed there during March 2012.
The February 2012 total was 2,592. For February 2013, the total was 3,708.
The January traffic counts were 2,483 in 2012 and 3,470 for 2013.
