Tritons sweep Ellsworth
STORM LAKE – The Iowa Central baseball team closed out its regular season on a high note with a sweep of Ellsworth on Monday.
After posting a 3-1 triumph in the opener, the Tritons (33-14 overall, 16-8 in the ICCAC) escaped with a 7-5 nine-inning triumph in the nightcap.
Fort Dodge graduate Luke Vandermaten (7-1) earned wins in both games of the doubleheader. Nolan Webster worked a scoreless seventh for his eighth save of the year in game one.
Justin Threlkeld delivered three hits for Iowa Central in the second contest, including a walkoff two-run longball. Spencer Mallonee also contributed three hits, while Dalton Parrott, Dan Potempa and Matt Molbury each added a pair of hits. Iowa Central racked up 19 hits on the afternoon.
“I thought we obviously played well (yesterday),” said ICCC head coach Rick Pederson. “(Alex) Hayden, (Quinn) Johnson and Vandermaten all threw the ball excellent. Our guys also swung the bats well, which should give us some good momentum heading into the postseason.”
With the two victories, Iowa Central clinched the third seed for this week’s NJCAA Div. II Region XI Tournament. The Tritons will face an opponent to be determined in their opener Thursday at 4 p.m. at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo.
