Algona runs its NCC boys streak to six

CLARION – The Algona boys track team continued its reign of dominance Monday night, winning a sixth straight North Central Conference meet.

Behind three event victories and two runner-up performances, the Bulldogs tallied 125 points. St. Edmond (114.5), Iowa Falls-Alden (102) and Webster City (100) all followed.

Bo Hjelle was a double individual champion for Algona in the 800 (2:00.29) and 1600 (4:33.84). Joe Teague (shotput, 47-11) also claimed gold for the Bulldogs.

Seth Reel (3200, 10:01.02), Hank Lentsch (high jump, 6-4) and the shuttle hurdle (1:01.09) each earned crowns for the Gaels. Lentsch actually prevailed in a tiebreaker over Cal Zahn of the Lynx.

Placing second for St. Edmond were Reel (1600, 4:35.68), Lentsch (110 hurdles, 14.82) and the distance medley (3:46.32), while Lentsch (400 hurdles, 57.86) and Cory Angstrom (400, 52.39) both finished third.

“I was really proud of our guys for running hard all the way until the end,” said SEHS head coach Bill Kibby. “It was just a beautiful night, and we had a lot of good performances.”

Webster City received triumphs from Boone Myers (discus, 146-05), the 4×800 (8:17.96) and the distance medley (3:44.75).

“We obviously had a big night,” WCHS head coach Tony Bussan said. “Our middle distance kids all did a great job. For Myers to come back strong after a battle with mono was a real credit to his perseverance.”

Eagle Grove’s lone title came from its 4×400 (3:34.03). Clarion-Goldfield’s only champion was Spencer Peterson (400 hurdles, 56.94).
