Fort Dodge school board amends 2012-2013 budget

The Fort Dodge Community School District board Monday approved an estimated amendment of the 2012-13 year budget.

“It’s that time of year when we need to amend our certified budget,” Brandon Hansel, FDCSD director of finances, said. “This is basically a procedural action. It does not affect or change our planned line-item expenditures.”

He added, “It’s just amending our certified budget up to those levels set a year ago.”

Four areas were amended. Instruction was changed from $26,311,511 to $27,237,797; total support services from $13,199,453 to $13,610,403; and non-instructional programs from $1,954,674 to $1,993,500.

The largest change, Hansel said, was with the district’s “total other expenditures,” which increased from $18,635,751 to $23,656,617.

“We’ll be increasing that by about $5 million to allow us to spend the cash on hand we have for the construction project,” he said.

The reason for the amendments in all four areas is “unexpected cash reserves.”

A public hearing for the approval of the 2012-13 budget is set for 6 p.m. on May 20, at the board’s next regular meeting.
