Robert “Bob” Hedberg, 88, of Fort Dodge, died Saturday, May 4, 2013 at the Gardens at Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge. A private graveside service will be held at a later date at the Blairsburg Cemetery, Blairsburg, Iowa. The Gunderson Funeral Home and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.

Bob is preceded in death by his wife Barbara Ruth Hedberg, his parents, and a brother in infancy.

Robert “Bob” Edward Hedberg, the son of Mel and Mildred Violet (Norstrom) Hedberg, was born May 11, 1924 in Dayton, Iowa and graduated from Dayton High School on May 21, 1942. Bob served in the United States Navy from January of 1944 until his discharge in September of 1945. He was trained as a Hospital Corpsman and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during WW II. After his honorable discharge, Bob came back to Dayton where he worked for the DeKalb Hybrid Seed Corn Company Research Farm and later as a hog buyer in Dayton. On June 26, 1949, he married Barbara Ruth Coons in Blairsburg, Iowa. In 1954, Bob and Barbara Ruth moved to Fort Dodge where Bob worked at Sears as department manager of the sporting goods and hardware departments for 33 years, retiring in 1986. Bob enjoyed sports. He was one of Dayton’s exceptional pitchers in his younger days. Bob also loved golf and has two hole in ones on hole 9 at the American Legion Golf Course. After celebrating 62 years of marriage together, Barbara Ruth died on April 12, 2012.

Bob was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Dayton, a life member of the DAV, the VFW and the American Legion where he received his 50 year membership. He was a past member of the Elks Club and Past President of the Local Sears Retirees Club. He was a member of NARSE (National Association of Retired Sears Employees), a member of the American Legion Golf Club, and a member of North Central Iowa Golf Tour.
