Dodger girls in action

Lindsay Boeckman believes that her Fort Dodge girls soccer team has turned a corner.

The co-head Dodger coach witnessed a 4-1 start to the season, including a plus-12 advantage in goals scored vs. goals allowed.

Tuesday night, however, Fort Dodge found out first-hand what it takes to compete with an elite program in the state, as No. 3 (Class 3A) Waukee earned a 7-0 victory inside Dodger Stadium.

With four first half goals – including three in the opening 15 minutes of action – the Warriors (6-0 overall, 1-0 in CIC Iowa) remained unscored upon, while also pushing their season goal total to 40.

“We knew they would be a big challenge,” said Boeckman, who co-coaches with fellow former Dodger standout Ashley Miller. “But I really felt like the girls were ready.

“Instead, we let the name ‘Waukee’ and the record and ranking get the better of us before we even stepped foot on the field. That can’t happen if we want to become a top team in the state.”

Waukee owns a pair of victories this year over ranked teams, having topped both 10th-rated (3A) West Des Moines Valley and No. 6 (2A) Adel-ADM.

Hannah McDevitt struck first, powering a shot in the second minute past Fort Dodge (4-2, 0-1) keeper Theresa Birzer. Eight minutes later Ellie Bunz scored her eighth goal of the year already, while Rachel Muse knocked in a 25-yarder to make it 3-0.

Waukee, which lost in the state semifinals a year ago to Ankeny, added a fourth first half goal courtesy of Anna Kollmorgen at the 28th minute mark.

To start the second, Kollmorgen found the net again, registering her eighth goal of the year. Alyssa Hewitt and Faith Haroldson netted the other two scores.

“Everything that we’ve worked on, and everything that we’ve done right through the first five games, we didn’t show any of that (Tuesday night),” Boeckman said. “But, we’ve got a chance to come right back Thursday against Marshalltown and get back on track.”

The Warriors held a 21-0 advantage in terms of shots on goal, while Birzer did record nine saves in net.

Fort Dodge will host the Bobcats (5-1, 0-0) at 7 p.m. Thursday evening.
