GOWRIE – Jacobus (Jake) Wabeke, age 89, passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 26, 2013 at Zion Lutheran Church, Gowrie with Pastor Jim Davis officiating. Burial will be in the Gowrie Township Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Peterson Post #431 of Gowrie. Friends are invited for a 12:00 (noon) luncheon Friday with visitation to follow until service time at Zion Lutheran Church, Gowrie. Memorials may be left at the family’s discretion. Palmer Funeral Home of Gowrie is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his daughters: Kim Manning (Terry) of Hampton and Connie Wabeke of Waukee; three grandchildren, Nicole Wickwire (Adam), Jacob Bell (Chelsea), Morgan Borcherding (Ty); five great-grandchildren, Paris, Izrael, Paisley, Jacobus (Jac), Ren; brothers, Cornelius Wabeke, Jr. of Newell, Bastian Wabeke of Ruthton, MN, Frank Wabeke of Battle Creek, MI, and GerritWabeke of Pipestone, MN. Preceding him in death are his parents, Cornelius and Helen (Muhlenberg) Wabeke and wife, Margaret; sister, Christine Pike; brothers, Arie Wabeke and John Wabeke.
Jake was born on April 24, 1923 in Hatfield, MN. He served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946 during WWII. In 1950, he established his home in Craig, IA. On October 30, 1957, he was united in marriage to Margaret Harms. They lived in Early then moved to Gowrie in 1973. Jake was employed with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 37 years. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, American Legion Peterson Post #431 of Gowrie and the Gowrie Golf Course.
