Join the fun Sunday

Spring is officially here. The weather has been a bit cooler and wetter than some might like, but most of us are eager to put wintry weather behind us and get back outside.

Sunday is a good time for some outdoor adventure.

The second annual Hy-Vee Half Marathon and 5K Walk/Run for JDRF kicks off Sunday morning. This event is designed both to be great fun and raise money to support the mission of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. JDRF is determined to find a cure for this serious autoimmune disease. The registration fees and proceeds from this Hy-Vee-sponsored undertaking go directly to JDRF.

The Half Marathon starts at 9 a.m. at St. Edmond High School. The 5K Walk/Run begins at 9:30 a.m. at John F. Kennedy Memorial Park. There will be activities for kids and entertainment at Kennedy from 10 a.m. to noon and Kids Fun Run events from noon to 1 p.m.

Also on Sunday, the Friends of Webster County Conservation are holding the Spring Park Festival at John F. Kennedy Memorial Park. This undertaking will take place Sunday afternoon and early evening. From 2 to 4 p.m. there will be flint knapping, archery and atlatl dart throwing. A Bike & Hike is scheduled from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on the new bike trail. There will also be a guided nature hike. From 6 to 7 p.m., chili and ice cream will be available, there will be a maple-syrup demonstration and assorted children’s activities will take place. The day winds up with a Prairie Night Burn at 7 p.m.

According to the organizers, the flint knapping, nature activities and supper will take place rain or shine. Some of the other activities are weather-dependent.

Show your support for the fight against diabetes and take advantage of the many pleasures Kennedy Park affords. Sunday is a good time to get a summer of outdoor fun started.
