Garden seminar is Saturday

HUMBOLDT – Cultivating Knowledge, a garden and tree care seminar, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 1212 Sumner Ave., Humboldt, sponsored by the Humboldt Public Library and Humboldt County Extension. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

Participants can learn more about the trees and plants on their property, and how to improve the landscape around their homes.

Presentations will be given by Dr. Jesse Randall and Yvonne McCormick. Randall is an Iowa State University Extension forestry specialist and assistant professor, and McCormick is the Region 7 horticulturist.

Randall will discuss topics including Tree Pests and Disease (Emerald Ash Borer, 1000 Cankers, and Asian Longhorn Beetle) and Tree Care – Old and New (tree planting and drought conditions affecting trees). McCormick will be speaking on Hardy Landscape Plants (easy to grow, tolerant of difficult conditions such as drought, and suited to our area). There will be a question and answer session following the presentations.

Door prizes will be given out at the end (must be present to win).
