Carlson named district Coach of Year
After guiding the Iowa Central women’s basketball program to its fourth-ever national tournament appearance, head coach Craig Carlson was recently named District E Coach of the Year for the 2012-13 season.
Despite returning no starters and limited experience to their roster, the Region XI champion Tritons compiled a 25-10 overall record, including 12-4 in the ICCAC.
“Our kids really deserved all the credit this year,” said Carlson, who owns a 201-65 mark through his eight years at the helm. “We played so well together at the end of the season. If we hadn’t won the regional title, I would never have won that award.”
Iowa Central has now posted at least 25 victories in six straight seasons. Carlson was also previously tabbed District E Coach of the Year following the 2010-11 campaign in which the Tritons managed a school-best 30 triumphs, while placing fourth at the NJCAA Div. II National Championships.
“This year was probably more rewarding just because of all the success we had with so many new faces,” Carlson said. “We started out slow (ICCC dropped its opener at home to Briar Cliff JV) and looked at the schedule kind of wondering where are wins were going to come from.
“We got better, though, with each practice and game. Every girl accepted their role and bought into the program.
“They made a decision that they weren’t a bad team.”
Prior to Carlson’s arrival, Iowa Central made its only other national tournament trips in 1987 and 2000. Carlson came to ICCC?from St. Edmond.
