Lightning knocks out power in Badger area

Thunderstorms turned off the lights on roughly 800 MidAmerican Energy customers in southern Humboldt County and northern Webster County Tuesday evening.

Hail was reported in Humboldt County and in Manson in Calhoun County.

Tony Jorgensen, the Webster County emergency management coordinator, said he had not received any reports of storm damage in the county.

The power outage was weather-related, according to Tina Potthoff, a spokeswoman for MidAmerican Energy. She said lightning caused a device called a feeder to lock open which in turn caused homes and businesses to lose power.

Potthoff said the outage began at 6:49 p.m. She said 834 customers were affected. Many of them, 253 customers, were in Badger. Other areas impacted by the blackout included Lone Tree Road in Humboldt County, and Kelly Drive, 140th Street and 190th Street in Webster County.

The lights were expected to be back on by 11 p.m. Tuesday, according to Potthoff.
