GOWRIE – Dick D. Rittgers, age 79, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Trinity Regional Medical Center, Fort Dodge. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 25, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Moorland, with Rev. Shane Deman officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be at the Gowrie Township Cemetery. Friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the Palmer Funeral Home in Gowrie. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.

Dick is survived by his wife of 57 years, Maureen; children, Brian (Pat) Rittgers of Carmel, IN, Veronica (Scott) Morton of Appleton, WI, Mark Rittgers of Gowrie, Rick (Jaci) Rittgers of Gowrie, Chris (Gloria) Rittgers of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; daughter-in-law Lynn Rittgers of Gowrie; grandchildren, Chris Rittgers, Paige Rittgers, Cara Morton, Jessica Morton, Jonathon Morton, Cayla Morton, Jaclyn Rittgers, Erica Rittgers, Alexa (Chase) Eastwood, Riley Rittgers, Juan Rittgers, and Eva Cantos. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Margaret Tucker Rittgers.

Dick Duane Rittgers, son of Margaret and Lloyd Rittgers was born July 15, 1933 at his maternal grand-parents’ home in Greene County. Dick graduated from Gowrie High school and attended Iowa State College, enrolled in the farm operation short course. Dick returned to the family farm and began his lifetime in agriculture. In 1955, he was united in marriage to Maureen Canavan, and five children were born to this union. Dick farmed until 2001 when he retired to their home in Gowrie. The couple enjoyed wintering in Florida. Dick maintained a lifelong interest in agriculture and was an advocate for protecting the family farm. He considered his grandchildren one of his greatest blessings and enjoyed their many activities and achievements.
