Betty J. McDowell, 87, longtime Fort Dodge resident, passed away in Iowa City, Iowa on February 28, 2013. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Fort Dodge on Monday, March 18 at 1:00 p.m.

Born on March 30, 1925 to George and Verna (Baggett) Bishop, Betty was raised in Carterville, Illinois. It was there she met Everett D. (Mac) McDowell, whom she married on January 18, 1942. The couple moved to Fort Dodge in 1951 where they raised their seven children: Michael B. (deceased, 2009), Sheryl S. Long (Chicago), David L. (Iowa City), Kevin L. (deceased, 1979), Brian W. (Chicago), Alexa K. (Minneapolis), and Joel A. (Cedar Rapids).

Betty was first and foremost a wife and mother. For some years, she and Mac had a shop on Central Avenue that housed his longtime business, Fort Dodge Office Equipment, and Jomac Antiques. In the 1980s the couple retired and for several years traveled part-time with their beloved dog Dolly in an Airstream camper, setting up at antique shows across the country. They retained their home in Fort Dodge until Mac’s death in 2001.

Betty is survived by five children, six grandchildren (Abby Smith, Matthew, Justin, Hannah, Sophia, and DeeDee McDowell) and three great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, please support the Alzheimer’s Association of America in their battle against that disease, which is described very fittingly as “the long goodbye.”
