SAC CITY – Wayne Herman Donaldson, 87, of Sac City, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at his home. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 15, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be at Farber and Otteman Funeral Home, Sac City, from 4:00 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 14.
Wayne was born on February 2, 1926 to Ross and Dorothy Donaldson in Madison, Wisconsin. He graduated from Racine High School in 1943 and attended Beloit College and Rockford School of Business on the GI Bill. Wayne served in the Pacific Fleet in WW II as a submarine signalman aboard the U.S.S. SENNET (SS-408).
On July 1, 1950 he married Patricia Morrissey. He began his career at J.I. Case in Rockford, Illinois. Wayne worked for Noble Manufacturing Company for 23 years as vice president of purchasing. He retired from Buena Vista College as a purchasing director in 1989. He enjoyed gardening, reading and playing cards. He and Pat traveled extensively to submarine veteran reunions. Wayne was proud of being the champion cribbage player of the South Pacific Fleet. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He was a member of VFW Post 590 and St. Mary’s parish.
He is survived by his wife, sons: Timothy (Kim) of Wayzata, Minnesota; Charles (Marie) of Geneseo, Illinois; daughters: Janet (Andrew) Hart of Asheville, North Carolina; Jacqueline (Robert) Harvey of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Joan Donaldson of Wellington, New Zealand, and eleven grandchildren.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Oscar Bernhardt; sister, Elaine Cowburn; infant sons William and Daniel; a granddaughter and grandson. Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s parish or Sac City VFW.
