Triton men OT thriller

CRESTON – The Iowa Central men went to overtime with Southwestern again for the third time this season, and the Tritons came out with the victory.

The Tritons (18-13 overall) used the extra period to pull out a 61-60 victory over the Spartans (15-15) to advance to the next round of the Region XI tournament.

“We played those guys three times and went to four overtimes,” said Iowa Central head coach Dennis Pilcher. “Our guys were resilient. We were down seven with four and a half mintues to go and came back and tied it.

“Defensively we made a great stand in the last five minutes.”

Iowa Central will now face top-seed Iowa Lakes in Estherville on Friday at 7 p.m.

With the Tritons leading by one, Southwestern’s Marquelis Edwards drove the lane with time winding down and the Tritons were called for a blocking foul with .9 left on the clock.

Edwards missed both free throws and the Tritons grabbed the rebound to perserve the victory.

Iowa Central’s Malik Brooks hit two big free throws with under a minute to go to put the Tritons up three. The Spartans then came down and hit a bucket.

“Malik hit two big free throws,” Pilcher said. “We just played good hard defense.”

The Tritons had the ball with 40 seconds left and missed the shot, putting the ball in Edwards hands.

Jesse Jones led the Tritons with 14 points. Rhys Elliot had 13 and Jawad Adekoya had 12.

The Tritons hit 10 three pointers in the contest. Jones had four and Elliot had 3.

Iowa Central will now face 11th ranked Iowa Lakes, who the Tritons upset two weeks ago.

“It’s going to be another battle down there,” Pilcher said.
