Triton men open Region XI play

CRESTON – Seeking a second straight Region XI Tournament title, the Iowa Central men’s basketball team opens its postseason trek tonight against Southwestern.

Tip is set for 7 p.m.

After dropping their regular-season finale to the Spartans in a 60-54 overtime road decision on Saturday, the Tritons (17-13 overall) are motivated to flip the script this time around.

Rhys Elliot (15.4 points per game), Jesse Jones (11.3) and David Andersen (11.0) are the top scoring threats in Iowa Central’s lineup. Jones also paces the team in assists (5.0) and steals (2.1), while Andersen leads the way in rebounds (5.6) and blocks (1.1).

Marquealis Edwards (16.2), Devin Kastrup (12.3) and Jack Harrison (8.2) form a reliable offensive trio for the Spartans (15-14), who tied with the Tritons in the final ICCAC standings at 7-7.

In their first meeting this year, Iowa Central escaped with a 58-53 double overtime home victory against Southwestern.

Last winter, the Tritons eliminated the Spartans in the regional tournament semifinals en route to their first national tournament appearance since 1990.

On the women’s side, Iowa Central’s first-round regional tournament matchup against Marshalltown has been moved from this evening to Wednesday due to pending inclement weather conditions.

Start time for the contest between the Tritons (21-8) and Tigers (11-19) is set for 7 p.m. at Hodges Fieldhouse.
