Geoghegan 2nd for Triton wrestlers
DES MOINES – The Iowa Central wrestling team came away with one runner-up showing in the NJCAA National tournament in Des Moines here Saturday.
The Tritons finished fifth as a team with 70.5 points.
Devin Geoghegan (157) was second after losing a tight 3-2 decision to Justin Cash of Rend Lake in the finals. In his Saturday semifinal Geoghegan beat Steve Dewitt of Harper in sudden victory.
Iowa Central’s Brandon Bradney (197) lost the Tritons’ only other semifinal match. He was pinned by Josh DaSiveira of Ellsworth.
Bradney placed sixth after two more losses in the tournament.
The Tritons added four more place finishes on the day.
Dillon Geoghegan (165) finished third after reeling off three victories on Saturday. Geoghegan defeated Scott Verner of Wester Wyoming 3-1.
In the consolation semifinals, Geoghegan beat Greg Gainey of Minnesota West 8-3. In the third place match, he beat Kris Schimek of Niagara County 7-2.
After losing in the quarterfinals, Geoghegan won four straight matches and finished 6-1 in the tournament.
Christopher Ballard (HWT) went 3-1 on Saturday and finished fourth. He lost in the third place match to Dequence Goodman of Lincoln.
Earlier in the day, he defeated Coltyn Pease of Rend Lake in suddend victory and Xavier Fisher of Colby, 2-0. In the consolation semifinals, Ballard earned a 6-3 decision over Alex Stockton of NIACC.
After falling in the opening round, Ballard won six matches before falling in the third place match.
Tristan Bundy (125) was eighth after two losses.
