Tritons announce football class
The Iowa Central football team announced the signing of 70 players, including several with area ties.
A total of 42 players have signed with the Tritons, while another 28 will walk-on later this summer.
Iowa Central went 6-6 last year, falling to Hutchinson (Kan.) in the Salt City Bowl.
“Our assistant coaches have done a wonderful job of identifying outstanding student-athletes who will come in and have an immediate impact on our football program,” said ICCC head coach Kevin Twait. “We feel we have signed some great players who will represent our football program well in the classroom and on the field.”
Players from around the Messenger-area that will be attending Iowa Central next year are Justin DaSilva, Tagan Dodson, Matt Streit, Josh Briese, Tyler Hansen, Jordan Rice and Cody Wellington.
Two years ago, DaSilva ran for 961 yards and 14 touchdowns for Laurens-Marathon. He suffered a torn ACL during a summer camp and missed this past season.
Streit, a graduate of Prairie Valley, had 71 tackles, nine for loss and seven sacks as a linebacker.
In terms of other notable players, Rory Siddell helped quarterback Solon to the second round of the playoffs. He completed 67-percent of his passes for 1,332 yards and seven touchdowns, while adding another 926 yards and 12 scores on the ground.
Fellow incoming quarterback Tyler Newsom also led West Liberty to the second round of the postseason, as he completed 52-percent of his passes for 1,565 yards and 18 scores.
Twait added that they hope to have another “30-to-40 walk on in the coming months to the program.”
Iowa Central is set to return over 70 players from last year, with all of them currently working on improving their skills on campus.
The Tritons open the 2013 season at defending NJCAA national champion Iowa Western on Aug. 31.
