Gaels to face East Sac County

A return trip to the state tournament gets tougher for the St. Edmond boys tonight as they’ll face East Sac County and one of the states leading scorers in Reed Tellinghuisen.

The Gaels (14-8 overall) will face the Raiders (17-6) inside the Fort Dodge Senior High Gym at 7 p.m.

St. Edmond is coming off an opening round 57-48 victory over South Hamilton and East Sac County defeated Manson Northwest Webster 57-54.

Tellinghuisen comes into the contest averaging 25.6 per contest, which leads Class 2A and is second in the state.

“He’s going to get his points,” said St. Edmond head coach Adolph Kochendorfer. “He has the green light to shoot and he’ll do it about 25 times.

“We’ll have to try and slow him down a little bit.”

Tellinghuisen, is shooting 47.5 percent from the floor and has hit 75 three pointers (38.1) percent.

The Raider junior has scored above 20 points in all but three of 23 games. He has scored 30 or more four times, including a career-high 51 points.

Justi Kraft (9.8) and Tyler Jacobsen (9.0) are the second and third leading scorers for East Sac County.

“Defensively we have to slow them down,” Kochendorfer said. “We want to defend them as a team and rebound the basketball and don’t give up second shots.”

Offensively for the Gaels, junior Robby Burke is the leading scorer. Burke is averaging 17.2 points per contest. He shooting 68 percent from the floor.

Senior David Flattery is also scoring in double figures at 12.7 per contest. Flattery has hit a team high 41 three pointers for the Gaels.

“They’re a pretty good team,” Kochendorfer said. “They’ve played good competition.

“We have to have good ball movement and we have to be patient.”

The winner of tonight’s contest will face the winner of Forest City and top-ranked West Fork. That substate final will be on Saturday in Webster City at 7 p.m.
