C-G’s Haberman 2nd
DES MOINES – Jake Haberman’s dream of standing atop the podium fell one step short Saturday night.
Wrestling in the Class 1A state finals at Wells Fargo Arena, Clarion-Goldfield’s fourth-ranked 160-pound senior was pinned by No. 2 Dylan Windfield of Alburnett in a time of 4:47.
“As far as the match went, Jake went out and followed the game plan just like we wanted him to,” CGHS head coach Kurt Morgan said. “He had the option of going (from the position of) neutral or down, and he chose down because that’s what he’s been doing all year.
“If he could do it again, I think he would probably pick the same thing.”
Haberman (35-8) actually gained an early lead on a takedown just 35 seconds into the first period. Windfield (47-1) then battled back with an escape, two three-point nearfalls and a takedown of his own en route to his fourth straight fall of the tournament.
“Jake’s a great kid, and him and (2012 state runner-up) Aaron (Anderson) knocking on the door the last two years gives our other guys confidence going into next year,” said Morgan. “We were only 10 seconds away from getting three guys into the finals (juniors Taylor Lehman and Mitch Gambrill were each edged in sudden-death overtime semifinals Friday), so our future is bright, too.
“We just need to keep plugging away.”
Both Haberman and Windfield were making their third consecutive state trips. Windfield, a junior, placed fifth in the same weight class here last winter for the Pirates, who earned both the 1A individual team title and recent state duals crown.
Haberman was looking to become the 44th individual state champion in program history for the Cowboys, which finished fourth at the 1A state duals meet Wednesday.
For a 26th straight year, the traditional state tournament featured a sellout.
