E-Hawk duo settles for 2nd
DES MOINES – Emmetsburg’s Austin McCartan was within seconds of winning a state championship here Saturday, but he finished second after giving up a late takedown in the Class 1A 195-pound championship match.
The E-Hawks also brought home a silver team trophy, finishing second behind Alburnett.
McCartan (40-1) built a 4-2 lead, but it slipped away after he gave up an escape and a takedown. McCartan recorded two takedowns early in the first period.
With 15 seconds remaining, the top-ranked Emmetsburg senior tried to hang on to third-ranked Cade Jones (44-1) of West Branch, but Jones slipped around and muscled McCartan to the ground for the takedown.
McCartan had a strong first three rounds, recording a fall and two major decisions.
McCartan finished third last season as a junior.
Nick Schany came up just short in his bid to win a state championship, grabbing a 170-pound silver instead.
Schany (32-7), who is ranked fourth, lost to top-ranked Brendan Schott (42-0) of North Linn. It was Schott’s second state championship.
It was a low-scoring match in which Schott recorded a takedown in the first period. He then gave up an escape to go down 3-0.
In the final period he recorded an escape and a stalling point.
Schany had a strong tournament, beating third-ranked Luke Huber of Hudson and No. 7 Devin Chesler of West Marshall.
He had two decisions and a fall victory for the E-Hawks.
