Tritons ready to ‘Jam the Gym’
The Iowa Central women’s and men’s teams will entertain conference powerhouse Kirkwood for Jam The Gym inside Hodges Fieldhouse here on Saturday.
The Triton women (18-6 overall, 9-3 ICCAC) tip off against the third-ranked Eagles (23-3, 12-0) at 1 p.m. The Triton men (15-11, 5-5) will follow at approximately 3 p.m. against Kirkwood (15-11, 6-4).
The Eagles women have dominated the league in recent years, compiling a 60-1 mark with their only loss coming against the Tritons two seasons ago.
“Kirkwood is the Conneticut of junior college women’s basketball,” said Iowa Central head coach Craig Carlson. “Kianna Jacobs is averaging 15.2 points and Banca Dufelmeier (10.5) is their second leading rebounder behind Jacobs.”
In their last meeting, the Tritons suffered a 74-50 setback in Cedar Rapids. Babaye Oja led the Tritons with 15 points.
Katie Dentlinger is the top scorer for the Tritons, averaging 12 points per contest. Oja is right behind at 9.5 and Miliakere Koyamainavure is scoring at a 9.5 clip.
“We have to handle their pressure and match their physical play,” Carlson said. “The last time we faced them, we couldn’t get any good looks and our shots weren’t falling.
“We always have a good crowd on Jam the Gym. We’re a lot different team then when we played them over there. We just have to stretch their defense and help jump start us. Our biggest concern is matching their physical play in the first five minutes.”
The Triton men are looking to snap a two game skid and will try to avenge a 68-57 loss to Kirkwood they suffered earlier in the year.
Sophomore Rhys Elliott is the leading the Tritons in scoring at 16.4 points. Jesse Jones is right behind at 10.5, and David Andersen is also scoring at a 10.5-point clip.
Devan Douglas is pacing the Eagles at 11.6 per game and J.C. Fuller is scoring 11.1. Najeal Young is also in double figures at 10.5.
