Dodgers compete at state swim
MARSHALLTOWN – The Fort Dodge swim team competed in four events at the state meet on Saturday.
Senior Cal Brandt grabbed the higest finish for the Dodgers, closing in 16th place in the 100-yard butterfly (55.42).
“I think Cal is really happy with the way he finished,” said Fort Dodge head coach Joel Greathouse. “There was a grouping of about seven kids that were within about a tenth of a second.”
RJ Hemmingsen of Lewis Central (50.25) won the event.
Junior Josh Lee was 19th in the 50-yard freestyle (22.63). Josh Gill of Dubuque Senior was the champion in 20.76.
“Josh came in 23rd and moved up to 19th,” Greathouse said. “He can’t be disappointed; it was a great accomplishment.”
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Lee, senior Alex Hage, Brandt and sophomore Rob Leigh finished 20th (3:24.16).
Dowling won the 400-freestyle relay in 3:09.44.
Leigh, senior Austin Sanford, Brandt and Lee were 22nd (1:32.09) in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Dubuque Senior was the champion in 1:27.08.
“The relays held strong,” Greathouse said. “The cutoffs were the fastest they’ve been in a while.
“We got in there and kept within a second of our times. We can’t be disappointed.”
Muscatine was the team champion and Dubuque Senior was the runner-up.
