MARSHALLTOWN – Plenty of unfinished business remains for the Fort Dodge boys swim team.
The Dodgers will compete in two relays and two individual events at Saturday’s state meet.
Start time is set for 12:30 p.m. inside the Community Y of Marshalltown pool.
“We know it’s definitely going to be a very challenging meet,” FDSH head coach Joel Greathouse said. “We’ve already dropped an incredible amount of time, so we’re trying to at least maintain that and hopefully maybe drop a little more.”
Senior Cal Brandt (100 butterfly) and junior Josh Lee (50 freestyle) will each participate individually for the Dodgers, along with the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays. Brandt and Lee are also members of both relay quartets. Others swimming on the 200 freestyle (1:31.38 qualifying time) are sophomore Rob Leigh and senior Austin Sanford, while the 400 freestyle (3:22.33) adds senior Alex Hage and Leigh.
“Cal is seeded 13th in the butterfly, and he would love to make it into the top-12 at state,” said Greathouse. “He has his eyes set on the school record, which he’s only about another second away from.
“I also have some big expectations for Josh in the 50 freestyle.”
Brandt clocked a mark of 54.93 in the 100 butterfly en route to winning a district title on Saturday at the FDSH pool. Lee, a district runner-up, enters ranked 23rd in the 50 freestyle, with a time of 22.62.
“Cal and Josh are both making their third trips to state, so they’re used to the atmosphere and aren’t going to be tense,” Greathouse said. “It’s going to be pretty tough, though, for our relays to move up since they surpassed my times and expectations I had for them at districts.”
Fort Dodge’s 200 freestyle relay is seeded 17th after earning a silver medal at districts, while the 400 freestyle relay is 20th following a third-place district showing.
At last winter’s state meet, Brandt checked in 20th (56.33) in the 100 butterfly. The Dodgers were also 15th (1:41.51) in the 200 medley relay, 18th (1:31.48) in the 200 freestyle relay and 23rd (3:24.10) in the 400 freestyle relay. Lee was on all three relays, and Brandt swam the first leg of the 400 freestyle.
