FD boys can’t stop SC East
SIOUX CITY – Fifth-ranked (Class 4A) Sioux City East remained unbeaten with a 77-58 victory over the Fort Dodge boys here Tuesday.
Junior Greg Kirwan and senior Marcel Dunson combined to score 48 points for the Black Raiders, who are now 19-0 overall. East scored 42 points in the first half and never looked back.
The 6-foot-3 Kirwan finished with 25 points in the post and Dunson added 23. Kirwan, Dunson and junior guard Wyatt Mounts had 62 of the Black Raiders’ 77 points.
”They are worthy of the recognition and ranking,” FDSH head coach Tom Daniel said. ”They have a very solid ballclub. Dunson is extremely athletic and Kirwan just shredded us, especially in the first half (with 15 points).
”You have to bring a different level of intensity and execution to compete at an elite level in 4A, and we didn’t do either (last night). You can’t just go through the motions and be sloppy with the ball or sloppy defensively and expect to win in a track meet against a team like this. Yet that’s exactly what happened.”
Senior Tyler Vaughn had 17 points for the Dodgers (6-11), who also lost on Monday at Southeast Polk. Zach Martinson added 13 and Blake Wilder contributed 12, but leading scorer JC Hatcher was held to four points.
”We’re not running our offensive sets well right now, and our spacing isn’t what it needs to be,” Daniel said. ”We simply weren’t good enough these past two nights physically or mentally to win on the road. A lot of the things you’re able to get away with against certain opponents can be exposed against others.
”There’s just no reason to get beat like this and give up the type of baskets we did, especially in the first half, playing a zone. We have a lot of things to correct in the next two days of practice in preparation for Ames (on Friday).”
The Dodgers take on the Little Cyclones at 7:45 p.m.
