SE boys wrap up regular season

Following four straight bitter setbacks by four points or less, the St. Edmond boys basketball team has an opportunity to right the ship in its regular-season finale tonight.

The Gaels (12-8 overall, 11-6 NCC) welcome North Central Conference rival Eagle Grove.

Tip is set for 7:45 p.m.

In their last outing on Friday, St. Edmond dropped a 49-46 home decision to league-leading Iowa Falls-Alden.

Junior Robby Burke (16.9 points per game) and senior David Flattery (12.4) are the catalysts in the Gael lineup. Burke is shooting a team-high 66.9 percent from the field, while grabbing 9.1 rebounds a night. Flattery also delivers 7.5 boards and 4.9 assists per contest.

Rounding out the rest of the SEHS starting five are seniors Aaron Chalstrom (7.2), Aaron McElroy (4.0) and Alex Mericle (3.7).

“It’s important for us to play a good all-around game (this evening) and hopefully get a win,” head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “I think our guys have probably lost a little confidence, but it’s not like we’re getting blown out of the water, either. We’ve been playing some pretty good competition lately.”

Earlier this season back on Jan. 4, St. Edmond thumped Eagle Grove by a 70-38 final. The defending Class 2A state runner-up Gaels have prevailed in six straight meetings against the Eagles since the start of the 2010-11 campaign.

“(Head coach) Lanny (Parrott) always does a nice job with (the Eagles), and we’re expecting them to come in and play hard,” said Kochendorfer. “Our guys need to go out there and earn that respect back.”

Eagle Grove (2-18, 1-16) has dropped six straight and 11 of its past 12, including a tight 54-52 loss to Corwith-CWL on Monday. Junior Zach Koesis (9.6) and senior Brennan Cameron (7.7) are the top threats for the Eagles, whose lone victories this year came against Hampton-Dumont (48-44) and Prairie Valley (61-46).
