Gaels win SCC duals

ROCKWELL CITY – The St. Edmond wrestling team repeated as champions at the South Central Calhoun duals tournament on Saturday.

The 14th-ranked (Class 1A) Gaels (20-6 overall) went a perfect 5-0 on the day, earning victories over Eagle Grove (72-12), Hampton-Dumont (53-16), Lawton-Bronson (56-16), West Monona (58-18) and No. 16 (2A) South Central Calhoun (43-27).

No. 8 Ryan Szalat (106), fourth-ranked Kaden McClintock (113), No. 5 Teddie Harvey (152), Dillon Nelson (182) and top-ranked Vinnie Harvey (220) all placed first with unbeaten marks for SEHS. Teddie scored an 11-1 major decision against West Monona’s No. 4 Logan Moore, while Vinnie recorded a first period pin against Lawton-Bronson’s 10th-ranked Ron Singleton.

“All of our top guys were focused and looked good,” said SEHS head coach Tanner Utley. “I liked the way we competed (yesterday).”

In addition, Colten Lastine (120), Eddie Harvey (132) and Parker Huebsch (145) were each second for the Gaels while Nick Johnson (126), Jimmy Averill (160) and Jacob Salisbury (195) all finished third.

“It was kind of a slow moving tournament, so it was tough to get ito a rhythm,” Utley said. “Hopefully, this performance can give us some momentum heading into sectionals next week.”

St. Edmond will travel to Ogden Saturday for a Class 1A sectional. The meet is scheduled to start at noon.
