FDSH girls go cold late
The Fort Dodge girls were unable to overcome a cold shooting performance in the fourth quarter Friday night, falling to Marshalltown, 49-40.
After leading for much of the first half, the Dodgers were outscored 17-4 down the stretch.
Fort Dodge’s (3-13 overall, 0-4 in CIC Northern) Lani Van Zyl scored 20 points, including 15 in the opening 16 minutes. Tiana Mericle grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds, while Ashley Altman scored nine.
Van Zyl pushed the Dodgers in the second quarter, scoring 13 consecutive points to push Fort Dodge to a 19-12 lead. She finished the period with 10.
The Bobcats (4-13, 2-2), who snapped a five-game losing streak with the win, closed out the half on a 9-3 run, and carried the momentum over into the third. Amanda Hughes and Samantha Hughes each posted 12, while Eisha Oden had seven, 12 boards and eight steals.
A 9-3 spurt by Marshalltown gave them the lead in with just two minutes left in the third, and the Dodgers would get no closer than one the rest of the way.
The Bobcats went 4 of 5 from the field in the fourth, including 7-for-14 at the line, while Fort Dodge was just 2 of 11 shooting over the final eight minutes.
The Dodgers will look to snap their five-game losing skid when they face sixth-ranked (Class 5A) Southeast Polk Tuesday night. Tip is set for 6:15 p.m.
