Big 4th lifts SE girls

ALGONA – The St. Edmond girls got back on track here Friday night, topping Algona, 50-40.

Hannah Lentsch scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while Anna Yung added 12 points, five assists and five rebounds for the Gaels (13-2 overall, 11-2 in NCC), who were defeated by Hampton-Dumont at home this past Tuesday night.

The Gaels clung to a one-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, but out-distanced themselves with a strong run.

“We went on a 7-0 run in the middle of the fourth quarter and stretched it out,” said St. Edmond head coach Scott Messerly. “The girls played defense well, and we were playing a 2-3 and 1-2-2 at times.

“Drue Specht played great defense in the middle of it.”

Abby Strohman and Heather Ziesman each scored 11 for the Bulldogs (10-5, 8-4), who had their three-game win streak snapped.

Algona stayed within striking distance throughout, as the two were tied after the first at 12. St. Edmond held a three-point advantage at halftime, but led by just one entering the fourth.

Alli Huss had eight points and pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds. Jaci Stumpf had seven assists and four steals.

“Hannah had a nice night scoring,” Messerly said. “We had great bench play and Drue was huge to that defense in the middle of it.

“Flattery and Stumpf also played well.”

The Gaels return to action Tuesday, hosting Humboldt. Algona welcomes Eagle Grove the same night.
