William “Bill” Matson was taken home to heaven January 14, 2013 surrounded by his family at the Veteran’s Hospital in Des Moines.

William Maurice Matson was born in Pilot Mound, Iowa on June 5, 1926 to LeRoy and Blanche Matson and joined a brother and three sisters in the family’s Dayton home.

Bill spent much of his growing up years working on farms and enjoying the outdoors by hunting, gardening and fishing. His love for fishing and gardening continued throughout his life as he kept a tackle box in his trunk to go sink a line in the river on a lazy afternoon and grew tomatoes outside his back door every summer.

Joining the U.S. Army in 1945, Bill served as a cook in Asiatic-Pacific Theater during the last few years of World War ll with the Company I 31st Infantry Regiment. After returning to Iowa, Bill continued to work on farms and various other jobs before beginning work at the Rosedale Creamery in Fort Dodge. Bill continued to work at the creamery the rest of his working career.

Bill married Lillie Scott October 7, 1956 and they made their home in Fort Dodge where they reared their two children. Bill and his family attended Faith Baptist Church in Fort Dodge and Bill was faithful in attendance until a few weeks before his passing.

Bill enjoyed traveling as well as driving around his hometown of Fort Dodge during his retirement years. Not one to stay home, Bill could often be found at the local gas station picking up a cup of coffee or shopping at Fareway. One of Bill’s favorite past times was playing cards and eating pizza with his niece Sheri and her son Jeff.

Those left to remember Bill include his daughter, Willetta (John) Sandberg; and son, Larry (Kay) Matson; six grandchildren, Sarah Sandberg, Joseph Sandberg, Laura (Pieter) Jacobs, Julia Matson, Krista (Josh) Robinson, and Adam Matson; great-granddaughter Lillie Jacobs and another great-grandchild to arrive next month; sister Sue Galbraith; nieces and nephews, and many other loving friends and neighbors. Funeral arrangements are being handled through Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services. The family will greet visitors Thursday, January 17 from 5 to8 p.m. at Gunderson Funeral Home.
