Dodgers 6th at Jefferson
CEDAR RAPIDS – Facing a competitive field, the Fort Dodge wrestling team settled for a sixth-place showing at the J-Hawk Invitational on Saturday.
The Dodgers tallied 116 points. No. 1 (Class 2A) West Delaware (227) was the champion, followed by top-ranked (1A) Alburnett (215).
No. 2 senior Duke Egli earned the lone individual title for Fort Dodge at 170 pounds. Egli, who moved to 25-0 on the season, collected two pins and a 12-8 decision over Oskaloosa’s ninth-ranked (3A) Andrew Landgrebe in the finals. Egli now has 95 career victories
“Duke was just dominant again,” FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson said. “Our guys that placed wrestled pretty well in a tough tournament.”
Finishing third for the Dodgers was No. 8 Riley Prescott (195), while Jonah Egli (138) was fourth.
Erik Birnbaum (106 pounds) and Sam Cook (182) each placed fifth, while Cole Detmering (113) and ninth-ranked Kyle Johnson (220) were both sixth. Birnbaum and Johnson recorded two wins apiece by fall.
“Birnbaum had probably the toughest weight class (four ranked individuals were at 106), and Riley just narrowly missed the finals,” said Thompson. “Our other guys wrestled tired and didn’t have a lot of fight. It was kind of a lackluster performance by the Dodgers, so we’re going to have to figure something out.”
Next outing for the Dodgers is Thursday when they host No. 7 (3A) Ankeny and Mason City for a triangular. Action begins at 5:30 p.m.
