Gaels back to defend CMB crown
COON RAPIDS – Seeking its third straight Coon Rapids-Bayard Duals crown, the St. Edmond wrestling team will have a sizable target on its back here today.
Action begins at 10 a.m.
Rounding out the rest of the field are A-H-S-T, Interstate-35, Pleasantville and host Coon Rapids-Bayard.
“I don’t really know a whole lot about the other teams, but we’re just looking to keep improving,” SEHS head coach Tanner Utley said. “We need to start winning matches in the third period and control the pace for six full minutes.”
In their last outing Thursday night, the Gaels (10-6 overall) saw their victory dual streak snapped at eight, dropping a 34-27 North Central Conference decision at No. 7 (Class 2A) Humboldt. Ryan Szalat (106 pounds), fifth-ranked (1A) Kaden McClintock (113), Nick Johnson (126), Matt Stumpf (138), No. 3 Vinnie Harvey (152) and top-ranked Vinnie Harvey (220) all prevailed for the green and white. Szalat, Stumpf and Vinnie Harvey each collected pins.
“We were right there (near a victory Thursday), and hopefully we can build off that performance (against the Wildcats),” said Utley. “It’s been a long week with three weigh-ins Tuesday, Thursday and (today), but we just have to continue to build momentum.”
Defending state qualifiers McClintock, Teddie Harvey and Vinnie Harvey all remain unbeaten on the season for St. Edmond, which won all four duals here last winter.
Coon Rapids Bayard junior Christian Hilgenberg (No. 8 at 120) and senior Austin Fink (No. 9 at 152) of A-H-S-T are the other top individuals in Saturday’s field.
