SE girls win again

ALGONA – The 13th-ranked (Class 2A) St. Edmond girls won their ninth straight game here Friday night, downing Bishop Garrigan 45-40.

The Gaels (12-1 overall, 11-1 in NCC) had three players score in double figures, led by Alli Huss’ 15 points.

Anna Yung scored 12 and Hannah Lentsch added 10 in the win for St. Edmond, which overcame six three-pointers by the Golden Bears (6-9, 4-8).

The Gaels broke open the contest in the third, building a 12-point lead. Garrigan, however, battled back, but was never able to stake claim to the lead.

“Garrigan did a nice job making some big shots even though we had a hand in their face,” SEHS head coach Scott Messerly said. “We never gave up the lead, but they made it close by hitting some three-pointers.”

Huss added nine rebounds, five steals and two assists, while Lentsch grabbed eight boards. Yung added seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.

“We were without our regular sixth-man in Madeline Baldwin due to illness, and Maddie McCarville was also limited, but I thought Brigid Hanley stepped up,” Messerly said. “Brigid played nearly the entire game for us and did a great job. Also, Drue Specht came in off the bench and gave us some solid minutes.

“This was a good win in a tough gym for the girls.”

For Garrigan, Kristin Condoleon scored 11, including a trio of three-pointers. Nicole Behr and Chelsi Lanus each added eight in the loss, as the Golden Bears saw their two-game win streak snapped.

The Gaels return to action on Tuesday, hosting Hampton-Dumont. The Bulldogs defeated St. Edmond in early December, 57-45, in Hampton.
