Charles City too much for Dodgers

CHARLES CITY – The Fort Dodge wrestling team made a few mental mistakes Thursday night, and that cost them a dual with No. 4 (Class 2A) Charles City.

The Comets scored bonus points at seven weights, earning a 47-25 victory.

The Dodgers (4-3 overall) earned wins from Erik Birnbaum, Matt Osborne, second-ranked Duke Egli, Sam Cook and No. 9 Kyle Johnson.

Birnbaum, Osborne, Egli and Johnson all scored falls. The win was the 91st in Egli’s FDSH career.

“We wrestled really well, but Charles City is a tough team,” said FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson said. “We had a couple of matches that we were leading and let them slip away, but that is our youth.

“It was a good dual. Charles City wrestled well and hard, and I think our kids can learn from this.”

The Comets feature six ranked wrestlers, including No. 2 Jesse Etherington and third-ranked Johnny Etherington.

Fort Dodge returns to action this Saturday when they head to the Cedar Rapids Jefferson Invitational.
